The Taj Mahal
Everyone knows what a magnificent monument the Taj Mahal is. It symbolizes love. However, do we really know the actual story as to how it came to be built? The cost to build the Taj Mahal was around $827 million USD. Approximately 20,000 people worked day and night for 22 years to complete construction of this monument. The architect who built it was Ahmed Lahauri. A popular myth surrounding this monument is that Shah Jahan cut off the hands of all the workers after construction so that they could never replicate the same structure again. This is not true though!
By the late 19th century, the Taj Mahal had been defaced by the British. They carved out precious stones from the walls due to which British Viceroy, Lord Curzon, ordered a restoration of the monument and also gifted a large chandelier which hangs in the interior chambers.
There is a lot of Mystery surrounding this beautiful structure! For now, enjoy my painting of the sunset on the Taj Mahal. See my full portfolio here!
